Can Durban is a private residential project delivered in collaboration with Terravita, where an initial outdoor lighting upgrade evolved into a comprehensive garden, audio, and home cinema transformation. What began as a contemporary lighting enhancement around a feature pergola gradually expanded to include multiple garden zones, premium outdoor audio, and a complete upgrade of the home’s TV and cinema space.
Concept Installations was responsible for the lighting design and control systems, outdoor and indoor audio integration, home cinema installation, and full automation, delivering a cohesive, high-performance solution throughout the property.
Client Brief & Project Evolution
The original brief focused on upgrading the outdoor lighting to enhance the garden and a striking pergola structure. As the project progressed—and following visits to the Concept Installations showroom—the client chose to expand the scope significantly, inspired by both the lighting demonstrations and the performance of the audio and cinema systems on display.
The final objective became clear:
- Create a highly atmospheric garden with layered lighting
- Add powerful, high-quality outdoor audio for entertaining
- Upgrade a dated TV room into a modern, acoustically treated cinema space
- Integrate everything under a single, intuitive control system
Lighting Design & Control Strategy
The garden lighting scheme was expanded to cover multiple areas, with new circuits added to create depth, contrast, and visual interest throughout the landscape. A combination of Light Graphix, Collingwood, iGuzzini, and iLED fittings was selected to balance architectural accents with functional illumination.
Lighting control was implemented using KNX and DALI, allowing flexible scene creation and precise control across the different outdoor zones. This approach ensures both energy efficiency and adaptability for different uses and times of day.
Outdoor Audio Integration
After experiencing the outdoor audio systems in the showroom, the client opted for a premium solution. Concept Installations installed an L-Acoustics 4.2 outdoor audio system using X6i loudspeakers and SB10 subwoofers around the main pool area.
The impact of the system led to a further expansion, with the audio extended into three additional garden zones, creating consistent, high-quality sound coverage throughout the outdoor living spaces—ideal for entertaining without overwhelming the environment.
Home Cinema & TV Room Upgrade
Inspired by the showroom cinema experience, the client decided to upgrade an existing TV room into a high-performance home cinema. The new installation includes:
- 77” LG OLED television mounted on a Future Automation bracket with integrated wall box
- 5.2.2 Lyngdorf audio system featuring D-500 front speakers, D-5 surrounds, and two DW-1 subwoofers
- Lyngdorf MP-40 processor and MXA-8400 amplifier
To optimise acoustics and maintain a clean aesthetic, the speakers were concealed behind a Camira fabric wall, with Cinema Build Systems acoustic treatments installed to significantly improve sound performance and room clarity.
Automation & User Experience
All systems—lighting, outdoor audio, and home cinema—were unified through Control4, providing the homeowner with intuitive control from a single interface. This ensures ease of use while allowing the complexity of the systems to remain hidden in day-to-day operation.
The Result
Can Durban is now a fully transformed property where garden lighting, outdoor audio, and home cinema work together seamlessly. The layered lighting enhances the landscape after dark, the outdoor audio delivers exceptional performance across multiple zones, and the upgraded cinema space offers a dramatic improvement over the original TV room.
The client was extremely pleased with the final result, particularly how the project evolved organically from a single upgrade into a complete lifestyle enhancement—driven by real-world demonstrations in the showroom.
